Mercy Regional Cancer Center Hosts Grand Opening Celebration Featuring Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy Technology

Port Huron , MI…Take a look inside the Mercy Regional Cancer Center’s new SmartBeam Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) technology at a Grand Opening Celebration, Tuesday, June 12, at Mercy Hospital, 2601 Electric Avenue, in Port Huron.

Tours of the Radiation Therapy Department and advanced linear accelerator will be held as well as an informational presentation, offered by Glenn Betrus, MD, a local urologist at Urology Associates, PC. The presentation will focus on prostate cancer awareness and new treatment options only offered in St. Clair County at Mercy Hospital. The Grand Opening Celebration will be held from 5 to 7 p.m., with the presentation at 5:45 p.m., in the Baggot Street Café. Guests are invited to use Mercy Hospital’s main entrance.

The Mercy Regional Cancer Center announced the availability of advanced radiation therapy treatment for cancer patients in early April, 2007. Using IMRT, patients can be treated for many types of cancer using pin-point accuracy. With IMRT technology, radiation beams are contoured to the exact dimensions of a cancer tumor, providing greater radiation intensity to the cancer area and less exposure to healthy tissue.

“This is an outstanding advancement in local cancer treatment for patients,” comments Kanu Dalal, MD, Radiation Oncologist at Mercy Hospital. “Bringing advanced lifesaving techniques to the community has been a hallmark of the Mercy Regional Cancer Center for more than a quarter of a century. Patients can find the best cancer care close to home.”

Free gifts and cancer screening guides will be provided. Refreshments will be served. To register for the event or for more information, please call (810) 985-1484.
