A Tribute to John J. Coury, MD
On behalf of the Mercy Hospital Board of Directors, Mercy
Hospital Medical Staff and employees, I wish to extend our
deepest sorrow at the passing of John J. Coury, Jr., MD.
The community has lost a great healer.
Not only was Dr. Coury a dedicated and talented surgeon,
he carried the flag for his fellow physicians and the entire
medical community by serving in a number of capacities working
with the Michigan State Medical Society, St. Clair County
Medical Society, and most notably serving as President of
the American Medical Association. Dr. Coury served in leadership
roles on the Medical Staff’s of Mercy Hospital and
Port Huron Hospital. And, he served on the Mercy Hospital
Board of Directors.
In 1986, Dr. Coury offered his “Code of Living”
which included a number of passages. The following points
truly stand out: Identify your goal and dedicate your
efforts in an organized fashion to achieve it through work,
study, community involvement or all three: Leave a legacy
you can be proud of and give more than you receive.
I believe we can all agree Dr. Coury gave much to this community,
while leaving a legacy few will attain.
I had the opportunity to meet and get to know Dr. Coury.
I saw that he was a compassionate physician and a gentleman.
He held the entire medical community and the professionals
who work throughout the area in the highest regard. He will
be greatly missed.
Sincerely,
Peter Karadjoff
