Exciting Hip Replacement Advancement Now Available At Mercy Hospital

Port Huron, MI…Mercy Hospital is pleased to announce a unique hip replacement procedure for patients under 60 years of age. The Birmingham Hip Resurfacing System has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and is now offered locally, through Mercy Hospital. The procedure is provided by Gerald Jerry, MD, and Cory Zieger, MD, two of a select group of surgeons in the State of Michigan trained in this advanced approach.

This state-of-the-art system covers the joint’s surfaces with an all-metal implant that more closely resembles a tooth cap than a hip implant; preserving more of the patient’s natural bone structure.

“This is one of the most exciting procedures I’ve seen in my 20 years of providing hip replacements,” explains Gerald Jerry, MD, “I see hip resurfacing as the ideal solution for many of my young, active patients who suffer from hip pain. As patients are getting younger and younger, and are staying physically active much later in life. We’ve needed an alternative to total hip replacement that accommodates both their age and their lifestyle.”

The Birmingham Hip implant is intended for patients suffering from hip pain due to osteoarthritis, dysplasia or avascular necrosis, and for whom total hip replacement may not have been appropriate because of their increased level of physical activity and age. However, many younger patients endure hip pain that limits their physical activities. This advanced procedure is designed to meet their lifestyle needs.

The Birmingham Hip Resurfacing (BHR) System was developed by doctors outside of London, England, and was first introduced in July 1997 in Birmingham, United Kingdom. Including the United States, the BHR System is being used in 27 countries and has been implanted in more than 60,000 patients worldwide. It has the longest clinical history of current generation resurfacing devices and is the only resurfacing device approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Mercy Hospital’s award-winning Orthopedic and Joint Center has been providing advanced orthopedic services for more than 50 years, including surgical hip and joint replacement for more than 30 years. Mercy’s highly-trained team of experienced clinicians continually receives state-of-the-art training. Mercy Hospital provides for more joint replacements than any other health provider in the thumb region.
