Pink Ribbon Ladies’ Day

Successful event offers area women the opportunity to support women in need.

From pirates to baby boomers, costumed women worked overtime to decorate golf carts and get into character for one of the most unique golfing events of the season. Mercy Hospital’s Pink Ribbon Ladies’ Day, held in June at Fore Lakes Golf Club, is annually dedicated to supporting area women with a flair unrivaled in the area.

For 11 years, women have come out to support this event focused on raising funds to help economically disadvantaged women obtain advanced breast cancer screenings after a positive mammogram.

With more than 150 participants, this year’s event raised more than $14,500.

“We continually receive outstanding community support to fund this important resource for women who are uninsured or underinsured,” comments Homeira McDonald, MD, Chair of the Mercy Hospital Foundation. “Women who are beneficiaries of this funding could be your friends or your neighbors, but they are all in need of advanced breast cancer diagnosis. With the support of the community, we continue to be able to help those in greatest need.”

Some come to Mercy’s 9-hole golf scramble Pink Ribbon event for the golf competition; some come for the Spirit Award or Cart Decorating Contests, but all come out in support of other women.

“We come year after year,” comments Bonnie Barrett, of Fort Gratiot, a local Realtor with JoAnn Wine & Associates and the team captain of the award-winning “Baby Boomers”. “We believe in this important cause and we like to support Mercy Hospital. It’s a fun opportunity for us to get together.”

Bonnie’s team has always been comprised of family members. “This event offers a great way to expose the younger generation to the importance of contributing to the community,” continues Bonnie. “It provides an opportunity to develop a tradition of caring. My stepdaughter and niece have come to this event with me in the past. That’s important to me because it’s part of my job to provide an example.”

The Baby Boomers team weren’t the only winners at this year’s event. The “Fairway Floozies,” consisting of Ann Durand, of Port Huron; Juliana Simpson, of Port Huron; Nancy Leveille, of Port Huron; and Joyce Relken, of Fort Gratiot, garnered the event’s Honorable Mention Award. The Cart Decorating Award was presented to the “Feel Good Foursome” team. Donning pirate attire and shouting, “Aye Matie,” the team consisted of Donna Schwartz, of Port Huron; Paula McVety, of Port Huron; Laura Nesbitt, of Clyde Township; and Stephanie Armstrong, of Fort Gratiot.

“It’s interesting to see what other teams come up with as themes for the event,” says Bonnie. “We plan for it all year long. We’re always thinking about our theme. People get busy, they come and go; but for us, this event is a priority.”

“With continued support from teams like the Baby Boomers, Mercy’s Pink Ribbon Ladies’ Day grows stronger each year,” comments Sondra Briese of the Mercy Hospital Foundation. “This is an important event for the community, it’s an important event for area women, and it’s especially important for those who are the beneficiaries — the poor and uninsured.”

The next event is planned for Thursday, June 28, 2007. If you would like to become involved or sponsor a team, please call the Mercy Hospital Foundation at (810) 987-1047.
