Jim Opferman
Jim Opferman (pictured above) of Fort Gratiot Township, serves as a MAVO Courier to help things run smoothly at Mercy Hospital.
Sister Margaret Weber, RSM
Sister Margaret Weber, RSM, (pictured above) of Port Huron, enjoys her work in the Atrium Waiting Room. Volunteers in both these areas are in high demand and immediate opportunities are available.

Helping Mercy Hospital serve its mission as a community health care provider can only be accomplished through the dedicated service of more than 180 active members of the Mercy Auxiliary Volunteer Organization (MAVO). Last year, the group contributed 18,000 hours of dedicated service to the hospital. Additional help is always needed.

MAVO is actively recruiting volunteers to serve in a number of capacities throughout the hospital. This is an excellent opportunity for community members to obtain new job skills, socially interact, and provide service to others in need. Volunteer opportunities include:

Atrium Waiting Area: Volunteers are needed to receive and relay information regarding surgical patients to family and friends. Morning and afternoon shifts are available.

Clerical: Support is needed in clerical areas for filing, copying, sorting and sending mail. Flexible day shifts.

Emergency Services: High-energy individuals are needed to assist staff, provide clerical support and transport patients. Day and evening opportunities are available.

Couriers: Volunteers can help staff the hospital’s main lobby reception area; greet, direct and/or escort patients and guests; and assist discharged patients to their cars. Those who like to be on-the-move are perfect for these flexible day positions.

Gift Shop: If you prefer the retail setting, this job is for you. Sell merchandise, run the cash register and restock shelves. Day and evening hours are available.

Knitting/Crocheting: For those who enjoy knitting items for patients, you can join a group or work individually. Yarn and patterns are provided, or you’re invited “to do your own thing.”

Mercy Regional Cancer Center Radiation Oncology Waiting Room: Volunteers are needed to greet patients receiving cancer treatment. Day shift only.

Spiritual Care: Supporting the Spiritual Care of all patients through this specialized volunteer opportunity.

Student Volunteers: Students, 14 to 18 years of age, interested in obtaining health care experience are invited to participate, taking advantage of flexible hours and schedules.

Patient Care: Continue direct work with patients and families by supporting nursing staff. Flexible hours are available.

Peoples’ Clinic: You’re invited to support the care of patients. Morning hours: Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at the clinic, located within the Guadalupe Mission.

If you would like more information regarding any of these outstanding opportunities to serve the community, visit the MAVO Volunteer Section of this website.
