Mercy Hospital Main Entrance is... Now Open

New Main Entrance
Expanded seating area, a cozy fire place and soothing atmosphere is what awaits patients and guests in the newly renovated Mercy Hospital Main Entrance and Front Lobby. To see the exciting changes first-hand, join Mercy Hospital for a “Sweet Heart” of a Celebration and Open House, Wednesday, February 15, from 4 to 6 p.m.

An open-air environment, a new welcoming station, pleasant and inviting surroundings; that’s what patients and guests can expect from Mercy Hospital’s new Front Lobby and Main Entrance.
Beginning today, Monday, February 13, renovations to Mercy’s main lobby are complete and the lobby is open.

“We have been looking forward to this addition to our already expansive customer service programming,” explains Peter Karadjoff, Mercy Hospital President and CEO. “These plans have been underway for some time, and are a continuation of our customer service initiatives that include the 20-minute Emergency Room treatment guarantee.

“We are continually looking at the environment in which we provide patient care,” says Karadjoff. “More and more patients and their families are looking for outstanding medical care in an atmosphere that promotes healing of the body, mind and spirit. Our goal is to continue to meet those needs through these renovations.”

In response to information obtained through local focus groups, Mercy Hospital has also remodeled its third and fourth floor patient care levels, offering carpeted hallways, and enhanced access to private rooms.

“Our physicians and patients have remarked about these exciting remodeling efforts and have responded positively to these changes,” concludes Karadjoff. “We’re committed to continue to do everything we can to meet the needs of our patients and guests.”

Mercy Hospital Foundation Assists in South Side Renaissance

Mercy Hospital Foundation and Acheson Foundation are teaming up to help in revitalizing the neighborhoods around the Mercy Hospital campus.

Mercy Hospital Foundation has established a fund of $20,000 for down payment and home improvement assistance. As part of the Revitalizing Port Huron Project, Acheson Foundation has awarded Mercy a grant of $20,000 to bring the combined total fund available to $40,000.
Down payment and home improvement grants of up to $7,500 are available to Mercy Hospital employees with a total combined annual income below $69,800. Although currently only available to Mercy employees, Mercy Hospital administration is piloting the program and envisions offering its structure to other businesses in its neighborhoods.

Mercy employees who wish to participate must plan to purchase an owner-occupied home within an established neighborhood around Mercy Hospital and must meet lender requirement. A number of banks that participate with the Michigan State Housing Development Authority (MSHDA) program are working with Mercy to offer the home-ownership lending opportunities.

For Mercy employees who select Citizens First as their bank for mortgage lending, additional matching money will be available through a grant of $10,000 from the Citizens First Foundation.

Citizens First Foundation is making these grants available as a continuation of their involvement in partnering with the community for the development of home ownership.

“We are excited about the opportunity to partner with Mercy Hospital Foundation to provide affordable housing options to Mercy employees; and work together for the betterment of Port Huron’s south side,” comments Donna Niester of the Acheson Foundation.

“We are grateful to the Acheson Foundation and the Citizens First Foundation for agreeing to team up to offer home ownership grants for the continued revitalization of the neighborhoods around Mercy Hospital,” comments Peter Karadjoff, Mercy Hospital President & CEO.

“We’ve got great employees who will make outstanding neighbors. We’re excited about this project for both our employees and for our community. Working with community partners to provide outstanding programs and services is simply a part of the Mercy Hospital Mission.”

Fund Raising Effort: A success for Peoples’ Clinic

Local physicians, residents and friends of the Peoples’ Clinic for Better Health provided overwhelming support for its programs and services during a recently held directed fund raising campaign.

The Mercy Hospital Foundation is pleased to report that more than $23,000 was raised to benefit clinic patients.

“We are fortunate to have such a high commitment to our work on behalf of the uninsured and underinsured throughout the community,” comments Sondra Briese, Manager of the Mercy Hospital Foundation.

Peoples’ Clinic for Better Health is the centerpiece of Mercy Hospital’s Mission. It is a collaborative project including Mercy Hospital and the St. Clair County Medical Society. The clinic is also funded in part by the United Way of St. Clair County.

The free medical services the clinic provides are available to those in St. Clair County who lack the resources to pay for their care. One-half of its patients are the working poor, who lack benefits or who have insufficient medical coverage.

Volunteers, including office staff, nurses, social workers and physicians (members of the St. Clair County Medical Society), staff the clinic which is open three days each week, and is located in the Our Lady of Guadalupe Mission on Port Huron’s south side.

“The success of this campaign is a testament to the level of dedication our community has to provide care for those in need,” concludes Briese. “The Mercy Hospital Foundation wishes to extend its gratitude to everyone who participated in this fund raising effort.”
