Mercy Regional Cancer Center Hosts Grand Opening Celebration!
You’re invited to take a look inside the Mercy Regional Cancer Center’s new SmartBeam Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) technology at a Grand Opening Celebration, planned for Tuesday, June 12, 5 to 7 p.m., at Mercy Hospital.
Find out what all the buzz really is about as you tour Mercy’s Radiation Therapy Department and advanced linear accelerator. See spectacular displays of Mercy’s 3-D imaging software system that allows for the pinpoint accuracy in the treatment of cancer tumors.
In addition to tours of the facility, Mercy will host an informational presentation, offered by Glenn Betrus, MD, local urologist with Urology Associates, PC.
The presentation will focus on prostate cancer awareness and new treatment options only offered in St. Clair County at Mercy Hospital.
Dr. Betrus will also explain how he works with the Mercy Regional Cancer Center to provide Image Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT) through the use of implanted gold seed markers to position the radiation therapy beam towards the prostate and cancer tumor.
This special presentation will be held at 5:45 p.m., during the event.
The Mercy Regional Cancer Center announced the availability of advanced radiation therapy treatment for cancer patients in April 2007.
Using IMRT, patients can be treated for many types of cancer, including prostate, breast, head and neck, lung, pancreatic and other cancers where precisely placed beams can be focused to carefully target tumor cells without harming surrounding healthy tissue.
“This is an outstanding advancement in local cancer treatment for patients,” comments Kanu Dalal, MD, Radiation Oncologist at Mercy Hospital. “Bringing advanced lifesaving techniques to the community has been a hallmark of the Mercy Regional Cancer Center for more than a quarter of a century.”
What’s more, cancer patients can be assured they are receiving the best cancer treatment close to home, as the Mercy Regional Cancer Center was named “Best in Cancer Care by the Commission on Cancer” of the American College of Surgeons.
Mercy also offers access to clinical cancer research trials, providing patients with the opportunity to participate in national research for the cancer cures of tomorrow. Mercy’s cancer patients can also expect access to some of Michigan’s best trained oncologists and surgeons right here in the community, and can be assured that they are receiving great care based on five-year survival statistics that often match or surpass National Cancer Data Base statistics.
