Strength Through Survival Series Planned to Benefit Pink Ribbon Fund

What inspires someone to overcome breast cancer and become a survivor? Rose Norton of Norton’s Portraits of Distinction will work with local breast cancer survivors throughout the coming months to honor their
Strength Through Survival.

Facing a diagnosis of breast cancer can be frightening to women. How do women take up the challenge of this disease? Where do they find the strength to fight in this battle? Is it their family, children or faith?

Overcoming the challenge of breast cancer will be the focus of a new Portraits of Distinction series offered by Rose Norton, a local photographer. In short the philosophical question will be: What is the inspirational focus women use to overcome their battle with breast cancer?

Strength through Survival will be a pictorial celebration of this triumph over breast cancer,” explains Rose Norton, owner of Norton’s Portraits of Distinction.

“Through this unique program local women, who are celebrating breast cancer survival, are invited to have their portrait taken in their choice of style,” continues Rose. “The photos will be produced in black and white with a distinctive pink ribbon (the universal symbol for breast cancer) set within the photo.

“Photos will then be unveiled on October 3, 2007 at a special event planned for the community,” Rose explains. “This is expected to be an event no one will want to miss.
“In addition, we will use the project unveiling as a fundraiser to benefit the Mercy Pink Ribbon Fund,” she says.

The Mercy Pink Ribbon Fund provides financial assistance to women in the community in need of advanced breast cancer diagnosis with no insurance or financial resources to pay for their care. This fund is also the beneficiary of Mercy Hospital’s 12th Annual Pink Ribbon Ladies’ Day planned for June 21.

Portraits will also be displayed during the month of October — Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Event locations are not yet determined, but more information will be made available as the month of October draws closer.

“I believe there are many wonderful stories in our community that need to be told through photography,” explains Rose. “There is also an unbelievable need in our community to support others who are diagnosed with cancer. Coupling this project with the Mercy Hospital Foundation is a terrific way to reach out and support both survivors and those newly diagnosed and in special need.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for local cancer survivors and their supporters to celebrate their victory and share their inspirational stories of survival. I am currently looking for breast cancer survivors who would like to participate in the program,” continues Rose.

Strength Through Survival is based on Rose’s successful People and Passion series which last year included a fund-raising exhibit that benefited the United Way of St. Clair County.

“As a continuation of the Portraits of Distinction series, it is my intent that this project will honor those among us who have overcome incredible obstacles in the battle against cancer,” she says.
