A Month in Review

Oasis Hair CompanyOasis Hair Company, in Fort Gratiot Township, kicked-off the month with an event titled: “Think Pink...Let’s Get This Party Started,” featuring a wine tasting event, raffle prizes, display booths and much more. Organizer Anna Morrison, places a pink hair extension in Lindsey Helton’s hair. More and more young women are learning the benefits of breast cancer awareness at an earlier age through fun events such as this.

Strength Through SurvivalOne of the most anticipated highlights of the month was the unveiling of Rose Norton’s Portraits of Distinction, Strength Through Survival series, featuring breast cancer survivors from throughout the area. The unveiling, which included hundreds of visitors, was held in early October, at the Thomas Edison Inn. Rose Norton, pictured above, spent five months developing the series, and credits the success of the project to a dedicated corps of volunteers who formed a committee to host this project and special events. All monies raised from the October portrait events will go to benefit the Mercy Pink Ribbon Fund.

The Upside of Breast CancerMercy Regional Cancer Center hosted a luncheon in early October to celebrate breast cancer survivors. Titled, “The Upside of Breast Cancer,” the event featured the wonderful music of Gentle Blend, a Sweet Adelines group (pictured above), a fashion show, inspirational presentations by Jane Diehl, MSW, and Kimberley Clark-Paul, MD, a local surgeon; fun and fellowship. More than 100 breast cancer survivors, friends and family members attended the event, which also included a fashion show by local clothiers Suzanne’s and Catherine’s.

YounkersYounkers department store, in Birchwood Mall, and its Salon hosted an event in mid-October, which included Clips n’ Tips for Charity as well as a number of breast cancer booths. Lisa Tyrrell, Human Resources Manager at Younkers (pictured above) is in the Salon with Mercy Pink Ribbons. Younkers hosted the event to reach out to the community to promote breast cancer awareness and support the Mercy Pink Ribbon Fund.

Clips n’ Tips for Charity and informationIn addition to Clips n’ Tips for Charity and information, Younkers hosted a live-remote with WSAQ and RadioFirst where local physicians, surgeons and clinicians were able to discuss breast cancer screening, treatment options and support services. Pictured above, Walid Demashkieh, MD, Huron Surgical Clinic, PC, talks on-air with Chuck Santoni about surgical options available for breast cancer patients.
