Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Mercy Hospital Hosts Numerous Events to Raise Breast Cancer Awareness

At events held throughout the month of October, the Mercy Regional Cancer Center reached out to women across the area to raise breast cancer awareness, honor survivors and help educate the community about the importance of proper breast health.

Event highlights included a Survivor Luncheon, Wear Pink to Work Day, and several Studio 1219 events that benefited the Mercy Pink Ribbon Fund. The month ended with a visit by Salon Pizazz who provided pink hair extensions to breast cancer supporters at Mercy Hospital.

“We’re excited to be able to participate in breast cancer awareness at Mercy,” comments Sherry Wehrwein, Designer from Salon Pizazz. The Port Huron salon donates all money raised from the $10 pink hair extension purchase to local breast cancer programs.

The month-long focus also included the availability of $50 reduced-cost mammograms. More than 30 area women, with no insurance and who lacked the resources to pay for their care, received the benefit of most advanced digital mammography in Port Huron. Mercy unveiled the availability of its new digital mammography services in October.

Mercy Hospital extends its thanks and appreciation to all those who participated in these important events throughout the month.

Frank ZmolikThe Mercy Hospital Associate of the Year is an employee recognition program that is held each year in September during Mercy Week, an annual celebration of the heritage of Mercy Hospital.

During the week, 11 associates who have been designated Associate of the Month, are considered for the annual award by all hospital staff. The winner is announced during a tea held in their honor.

Frank, who has been a Mercy Hospital associate since 2001, was very surprised with the award. “I couldn’t believe it,” comments Frank Zmolik.
