Mercy Regional Cancer Center Reports Outstanding Five-Year Cancer Survival Rates

Port Huron, MI…The best just got better! Mercy Hospital is proud to announce that the Mercy Regional Cancer Center’s five-year cancer survival rates surpass national rates as compared to the National Cancer Data Base for breast, prostate, colon and lung cancers. Verification of this data is now available to the public through the Mercy Regional Cancer Center Annual Report that includes its most recent data through 2004.

“As this report will attest, Mercy has once again scored a victory for cancer patients throughout St. Clair County and in the region,” comments Krishna Valjee, MD, Co-Chair of the Mercy Cancer Committee. “This level of cancer care is the result of dedicated cancer care staff and community physician partners who are committed to providing the best in cancer care close to home.”

Coming on the heals of Mercy’s recertification by the Commission on Cancer (CoC) of the American College of Surgeons which proclaimed Mercy an area leader in cancer care, data provided in Mercy’s Cancer Care Annual Report will offer a more in-depth look at Mercy’s outstanding survival data as well as the programs and services. This is the exact data the CoC utilizes when determining recertification of community cancer programs.

“I want to stress again, that we share the leadership distinction of being a CoC certified program with other oncology program including Karmanos Cancer Institute, Henry Ford Health System, Michigan State and the University of Michigan programs, and even the nationally renowned Mayo Clinic,” comments Kanu Dalal, MD, Co-chair of the Mercy Cancer Committee. “The publication of Mercy’s cancer survival data is just one more step Mercy is taking to advance cancer care in the area.”

The Mercy Regional Cancer Center offers a complex and comprehensive array of cancer services partnering with area leaders in cancer care to offer the most advanced diagnostic and treatment capabilities available on a local level. From access to clinical research cancer treatment trials through the Mercy Institutional Review Board and Blue Water Oncology, PC, to conducting regularly scheduled tumor boards to advance the care and treatment of individual patients, Mercy works in concert to offer the services necessary for patients to beat cancer close to home.

Mercy Regional Cancer Center is pleased to offer these services in conjunction with local board certified oncologists including: Samir Alsawah, MD; Timothy Cox, MD; Youssef Hanna, MD; and Anup Lal, MD.
