NUTRITION & CANCER PREVENTION
MERCY
HOSPITAL REALITY WELLNESS SERIES
Port Huron, MI …Thinking
about cancer is something most of us would rather avoid.
But, the reality is, cancer is the second leading cause
of death in St. Clair County. Today, we know that paying
more attention to our cancer risk is something that can
yield real dividends. To help understand the facts, join
Mercy Food & Nutrition Services for its May program,
Nutrition and Cancer Prevention. The educational event
will be held Thursday, May 4, beginning at noon, in the
Mercy Hospital Auditorium.
“Scientists have long estimated that a large percentage
of our cancer risk is related to our lifestyle choices,” explains
Megan Dziedzic, Mercy Nutrition & Food Services Registered
Dietitian. “The international report on cancer prevention
from the American Institute for Cancer Research, Food,
Nutrition and Prevention of Cancer: a global perspective,
found that 30 percent to 40 percent of all cancers are
directly linked to the foods we eat, the exercise we get
and how well we watch our weight. Furthermore, the report
estimated that 30 percent of cancers can be prevented by
not using tobacco.”
What does this mean? “We have the potential through
our daily food and lifestyle choices to have a major impact
on the cancer risk we individually face in our lives,” continues
Dziedzic. Let Mercy help. The Nutrition and Cancer Prevention
program will include an overview of the relationship between
food and cancer risk, and offer information on the power
of nutrients in fruits and vegetables in helping to prevent
disease.
The cost of the event is $5. Lunch is included. Seating is
limited, and registration is required, please call (810)
985-1683 to make a reservation today. |
