Mercy Inpatient Rehabilitation Center FAQ (frequently asked questions)

1. Why should I choose the Inpatient Rehabilitation program at Mercy?
Mercy’s Inpatient Rehabilitation program is “hospital based”. This means your rehabilitation occurs right in a hospital where your physician can see you on a regular basis. Your progress is reviewed on a weekly basis with your treatment team. You will receive progress reports after these meetings. Additionally, if your physician orders other tests during your rehabilitation stay, they can be performed without leaving the building.

2. How much therapy will I receive?
Mercy’s therapy program (occupational therapy (OT), physical therapy (PT) and/or speech therapy) is geared to be “intensive”. This means you will receive three hours of therapy, five out of seven days a week, between the hours of 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. Therapy is offered Monday through Saturday. Your medical doctor must indicate that you are medically stable and can tolerate this level of activity. Your acceptance into Mercy’s program will be determined prior to your transfer by a Physiatrist (a physician specially trained in physical medicine and rehabilitation).

3. Does my medical insurance cover the Mercy Inpatient Rehabilitation program?
Every insurance policy is different. Our referral coordinator will verify your coverage. This will help in your decision to come to Mercy’s program. Medicare covers Mercy’s program as Hospital Days. This allows you to save your limited Nursing Home Days for when you really need them. Television and telephone services are included in your hospital stay.

4. How many Mercy patients return home or back to the community after inpatient rehabilitation?
On average, 85 percent of Mercy’s patients return home or back to the community. Our discharge planning process begins prior to the rehabilitation program admission and continues throughout the hospital stay.

5. What happens if I’m not ready to go home when I leave the program?
The rehabilitation team will work with you and your family to determine an alternate discharge plan, such as assisted living or nursing facility.

6. What are the visiting hours?
Visiting hours are Monday through Friday, 5 to 8 p.m.; and Saturday, Sunday and holidays, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. This will allow you to gain the maximum benefit from your scheduled therapy sessions.

7. What will I wear while on the rehabilitation unit?
You will need several changes of comfortable clothing, a sweater, walking shoes, undergarments and pajamas.

8. Who will be my doctor while I’m in the Mercy Inpatient Rehabilitation program?
You will be admitted under a Physiatrist (a physician specially trained in physical medicine and rehabilitation). Your personal physician may follow your care if he/she has privileges at Mercy Hospital. Depending on your needs, other specialists may also follow you.
