“When you cease to make a contribution, you begin to die. I think it is necessary to be doing something which you feel is helpful in order to grow old gracefully and contentedly.”

-Eleanor Roosevelt

Mercy Auxiliary Volunteer Organization (MAVO)

Welcome to MAVO! In existence for more than 50 years, Mercy Hospital’s corps of dedicated volunteers has been providing patient and guest support, fund raising activities and an opportunity to offer community service to those interested in giving of themselves through volunteerism.

The reasons why people volunteer at Mercy are as varied as the individuals themselves. For many, volunteering offers an opportunity to:

  • Give something back to the community
  • Increase the sense of purpose and fulfillment in their lives
  • Meet new friends and experience the joys of belonging to a special group of caring people
  • Learn new skills while meeting new challenges
  • Have fun

Placement & Scheduling

You need no special skills, education or experience to join MAVO. All we ask is that you have a positive attitude and a willingness to work. We will match your interests and abilities with an opportunity that is just right for you.

Volunteer positions are available for all ages. If you are willing to make a commitment, you may begin volunteering at 14 years of age through the Junior Auxiliary.

There is a cost to becoming a MAVO volunteer. We ask volunteers to offer a $5 donation that pays for membership and contributes to the cost of volunteer smocks, name badges and the volunteer newsletter.

Through MAVO, we offer flexible scheduling. Many of our volunteers travel or have school commitments that change frequently. We can easily tailor your volunteer service to match your personal needs.

Both short-term (no less than six months) and long-term assignments are open, with flexible hours to fit your busy schedule.

All volunteers receive specialized and professional training.

The Buzz

Following is a quote published in a recent edition of the Times Herald [July, 2006], from a Mercy Volunteer:

“I was happy to help at Mercy Hospital as a volunteer. From the love and care that was given from admitting to discharge, I saw everything and was able to talk with the Sisters at Mercy Hospital. I respect them and the other ladies who gave me, as a volunteer, strength and hope for our patients. It was a great feeling.”
